Your Life in a Suitcase

By ConversaSpain

Packing is always hard. No matter if it is for a weekend, a month, or a whole year. I mean, who likes having to think about their outfits ahead? And not being able to take all the things they want? And what about making sure you take everything you need? And when we say “everything” we mean you will forget something like your PJs or toothbrush: a classic.

Anyways, packing is a headache, especially for those who do it last minute -which is 99% of us-, but it is a preview for exciting days to come. So, if you are excited about that trip, packing does not feel so painful… And we have no doubt you are excited to be an Auxiliar de Conversación next year! But enough with the small talk. Let’s get to it, to our Guide to Pack your Life in a Suitcase.

Guide to Pack Your Life in a Suitcase

First of all, open Spotify and put on this playlist to get you in the Spanish mood while you pack! Then, get ready to follow these steps:

Step 1: A suitcase

This is crucial for obvious reasons.

Step 2: Get a pen and a sheet of paper

Make a list! Nothing better than writing it down to double-check once you have packed.

Step 3: Documentation

We know you are excited to pack, get everything ready and be here, but do not forget your passport, your ID, your boarding pass, your credit card… Otherwise, you might not even make it to the airport!

Step 4: Clothes

Check the weather of the place you will live in and pack your clothes accordingly. If you are going to stay abroad for a year, remember to pack having in mind all seasons! I would not recommend wearing shorts to school in December… but you do you!

Step 5: Toilet kit/bag

Once you have all your clothes packed, it is time for your toilet kit/bag: toothbrush, toothpaste, make-up if needed, hairbrush… and whatever it is you use to get that morning glow.

Step 6: Bathroom utilities

It depends on whether you want to bring your towel, sheets, shampoo… or others with you. We recommend buying it once you get to Spain.

Step 7: A handbag or smaller suitcase

In this suitcase, pack things for the first couple of days just in case your suitcase gets here late. It is good to anticipate this kind of thing!

Step 8: An adaptor

You won’t be the only one wanting to adapt to a new culture. So will electronics!

Step 9: Entertainment

You might have a long flight so having something to keep you entertained is always a good idea. A book, a laptop, or ConversaSpain’s blogs printed and ready to be read: get those markers out and take some notes!

Step 10: Memories

If you are a sentimental -just like us- get those pictures with your friends/family/significant other…, letters, or even that snack you might not find here. That way, you get to have a little piece of home with you. Be ready to find a new home once you get here though! And be ready to share those snacks with us? Maybe? Please?…

And do not forget to bring… yourself!

We know these are not the 10 commandments and each one needs different things, but these are the essentials we came up with when thinking of packing our life in a suitcase. However, the most important thing is always to pack motivations, feelings, excitement -and even fears- to be ready to live one of the best experiences of your life.

Good luck and have fun while packing! And, if you have any recommendations or if we missed something, let us know in the comments.
